ALGERIA, March 17 (YPA) – The Algerian army on Thursday started conducting a military maneuver near the border with Morocco, with the participation of land, air and sea combat units, and with live ammunition.
The move comes weeks after Rabat announced the establishment of a military zone near the same area.
According to Algerian political science professor and journalist “Walid Kabir”, “the Algerian army’s maneuvers are a response to the establishment of a new Moroccan military zone in the east of the country.”
He added that the maneuver “is a message from Algeria to its neighbors that it is ready to defend its borders and national sovereignty.”
The Algerian response to Morocco by conducting military exercises comes according to a decision approved by the Algerian Supreme Security Council, headed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Last month, Morocco established a military zone on the border with Algeria, in a move that comes in the context of the increasing tension between Rabat and Algeria, which severed its relationship with the Kingdom months ago.
