EU: Attack on Hodeidah will have devastating consequences for Yemeni people
SANAA, June 14 (YPA) – The attack on the city and port of Hodeidah will lead to devastating consequences for the civilian population, European High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides said in a joint statement obtained by Yemen Press Agency on Thursday.
The attack on the port of Hodeidah, which is a vital facility for the delivery of life-saving materials to the Yemeni people, will lead to further deterioration in the already disastrous humanitarian situation in the country, read the statement.
The statement urged all parties of conflict to respect international humanitarian law and to give priority for the protection of civilians, including ensuring that the port of Hodeidah remains operational as a lifeline for humanitarian support and commercial access point for essential supplies.
Recent developments will lead instability in Yemen and undermine ongoing efforts by UN special envoy Martin Griffith to resume the political process, the statement said.
The European Union renewed its call on all parties to engage with the UN special envoy to resume talks toward a comprehensive political and negotiating solution, stressing the EU’s readiness to provide full support to the UN-led efforts.
