Russia studies recognizing Taliban authority in Afghanistan

MOSCOW, Sept. 02 (YPA) – The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that Moscow would study the possibility of recognizing the authority of Taliban movement in Afghanistan after the formation of a government that includes all parties in the country.

“We call for the formation of a coalition government that includes all parties and in which all ethnic and political forces, including national minorities, participate,” said the ministry’s spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, during a press conference on Thursday.

Zakharova added “That is why the question of official recognition of the (Afghan) authorities will become an issue after this process is completed.”

The spokeswoman stressed that Russia systematically supports the transformation of Afghanistan into a peaceful, independent and economically comfortable state.

She noted, however, that “the random process implemented by Western countries to withdraw from Afghanistan may negatively affect the welfare of the whole country in the new historical stage.”
