SANAA, Sept. 01 (YPA) – Britain is in direct talks with the Taliban on ensuring the safe exit of British citizens and Afghans who worked for Britain from Afghanistan.
A government spokesman said in a statement on Tuesday night that Simon Gass, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s special representative during the transitional period for Afghanistan, had traveled to Doha to meet senior Taliban representatives.
“Gass is meeting with senior Taliban representatives to stress the importance of the safe exit of British and Afghan nationals who have worked with us for the past 20 years from Afghanistan,” the statement said.
On Tuesday, British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said that several hundred Britons had not yet left Afghanistan.
The United States completed the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan on Monday, ending a war that culminated in the return of the Taliban movement (banned in Russia) to power.
Britain’s mission ended on Saturday, when the last military flight left Kabul after the evacuation of more than 15,000 people in the two weeks since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan.
