SANAA, Sept. 01 (YPA) – President Joe Biden on Tuesday rejected criticism regarding his decision on the withdrawal from Afghanistan this week, a move that left between 100 and 200 Americans in the country along with thousands of Afghan citizens allied with Washington.
In a televised speech from the White House, Biden criticized the former Afghan government’s inability to counter the Taliban’s lightning advance, forcing the United States and its NATO partners out in a swift and humiliating manner, and highlighting the role played by former US President Donald Trump.
Biden said the Trump-brokered agreement allowed “the release of 5,000 prisoners last year, including some of the Taliban’s top warlords who took power.”
“By the time I took office, the Taliban were in the strongest military position since 2001, controlling or competing for control of nearly half of the country,” he said.
“US officials believe that between 100 and 200 Americans are still in Afghanistan and “have some intention to leave,” Biden added.
