Afghan security officer killed in attack on Kabul airport by gunmen

KABUL, Aug. 23 (YPA) – The German army said on Twitter that a firefight broke out between Afghan security forces and unknown assailants at the northern gate of Kabul airport.

An Afghan security officer was killed and three others wounded in the battle, which also involved US and German forces, he said, adding “there were no casualties among German army soldiers.”

The US Embassy in Afghanistan earlier advised US citizens to avoid traveling and heading to Kabul airport, where evacuations are taking place, because of “potential security threats.”

“A threat from ISIS to Kabul airport is real and very dangerous,” the US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Sunday, adding that “information from sources on the ground makes us take the ISIS threat as “acute,” and “persistent”

EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said that “it will be impossible to get all Afghans out, who need protection”,  noting  that the evacuation of “60,000 people” by the end of this month will be an impossible.
