EU reveals size of US expenditures in Afghanistan

SANAA, Aug. 19 (YPA) – The European Union described the developments in Afghanistan as a disaster and a nightmare for the Afghan people and for the confidence that the West enjoys in the world,” noting the amount of money that the West has invested in this country in the past two decades.

Russia Today channel quoted the European Union High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, as saying in a speech he delivered during an emergency meeting of the Foreign Affairs and Development Committees of the European Parliament, that the speed of the recent field developments in Afghanistan has become surprising not only to the West, but to the Taliban as well. .

Borrell described the developments there as a disaster, asking: “Where were our intelligence services, which failed to predict this? I am convinced that even the Taliban did not expect this.”

Borrell acknowledged that the West invested in Afghanistan with huge resources, noting that the United States alone was spending 300 million dollars on the Afghan file daily during the past 20 years.

This comes after the Taliban movement took control last Sunday of the capital, Kabul, without facing any significant resistance from the internationally recognized government forces, after NATO withdrew most of its forces from the country.
