SANAA, Aug. 16 (YPA) – The UN Security Council will hold an emergency session later on Monday to discuss the developments in Afghanistan after the Taliban entered the capital, Kabul.
An open meeting followed by closed consultations was confirmed after a request from Estonia and Norway.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will address the council’s 15 member states, his office said.
The statement said Guterres is following the situation in Afghanistan with deep concern and urged the Taliban and all parties to “exercise maximum restraint in order to protect lives and ensure that humanitarian needs are met.”
The statement stated that “the United Nations remains determined to contribute to a peaceful settlement and the promotion of human rights for all Afghans, particularly women and girls, and to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance and vital support to civilians in need.”
