SANAA, Jun. 14 (YPA) – The Somali army announced the killing of 50 members of the extremist “Al-Shabab” movement, in operations carried out in the southern and central parts of the country, in the last 48 hours.
Somali state television quoted military commanders as saying that “the operations took place in the central Hiran region, Middle Shabelle, and the southwestern Shabelle province separately.”
The Somali army announced the destruction of many strongholds of the movement during the past 48 hours.
The army added, “Recent operations against the movement in the Middle Shabelle region have so far killed more than 130 terrorists, and liberated at least 6 villages.”
As the country prepares to hold parliamentary and presidential elections in the coming months, the army has intensified its operations against the movement.
