Egyptian expert warns against Ethiopia’s emptying of one of its water dams

SANAA, June 7 (YPA) – Professor of Water Resources at Cairo University, Dr. Abbas Sharaki, confirmed on Sunday that Ethiopia’s unilateral decision to operate and unload with Sudan without warning puts it at risk.

Sharaki stated that Ethiopia will empty two billion cubic meters of water from a dam called Takizi, which may increase the water level in the Atbara River in Sudan.

He pointed out that the Atbara River supplies the Nile with about 11 billion cubic meters of water, and that Sudan has 3 dams on it.

The professor of water resources at Cairo University stressed that the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources in Sudan has warned citizens of the possibility of rising water levels in the Atbara River, according to the website “Akhbar Al-Youm.”

To date, all rounds of negotiations between Ethiopia on the one hand and Egypt and Sudan have failed to reach an agreement on the rules for filling and operating the dam, and the most prominent of these rounds were those that were held under American auspices, without signing an agreement between the three countries, as Ethiopia refused to sign the agreement reached by the negotiations.

The African Union, over three sessions, headed by Egypt, South Africa and Congo, respectively, also failed to push the three countries to conclude an agreement.
