House Speaker denounces IPU’s decision to recognize pro-coalition parliament

SANAA, Jun. 01 (YPA) – The Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, Yahya Ali Al-Ra’i, on Tuesday strongly condemned the arbitrary decision issued by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)’s Board of Directors, which included the recognition of the so-called “Sayoun’ parliament” loyal to Saudi-led coalition.

This came in a letter sent by Al-Ra’i to the IPU’s President, Doatre Pacheco, in response to a letter he received from Assistant Secretary-General of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments (ASGP), which included the association’s apology for the participation of the Secretary-General of the Yemeni Parliament, Dr. Rashad Al-Rassas, in the Assembly’s conference or the recognition of him as a member of the Assembly.

In the letter, the Speaker of the Parliament affirmed that the parliament that exercises its legislative and oversight functions and powers in accordance with the constitution at its headquarters in the capital Sanaa is the legitimate and constitutional representative of the Yemeni people.

Al-Ra’i considered the decision a violation of parliamentary charters and norms, and a breach of the tasks and responsibilities entrusted to the union according to its statute.

He affirmed the Yemeni parliament’s rejection and denunciation of the measure issued by the IPU’s Board of Directors, as it contradicts the will of the steadfast Yemeni people in the face of the arrogance countries’ aggression on Yemen since March 26, 2015.
