SANAA, March 22 (YPA) – At least two police officers were seriously injured and two police cars were set on fire in Bristol, south-west England, during violence after a peaceful protest, police said.
On Sunday, thousands of demonstrators gathered in the city centre, ignoring the restrictions of Covid-19, to protest a government bill in parliament that would give police new powers to restrict street protests.
“The demonstration started peacefully. However, it later turned into violence by a small minority.
“What happened in Bristol is unacceptable,” Home Secretary Priti Patel said on Twitter, according to the Daily Mirror Newspaper.
“Bullying and disorder by a minority will never be tolerated,” she said.
“Our police are putting themselves at risk to protect us all.” I sympathize with the injured policemen.”
Two police officers were taken to hospital, one with a broken arm and the other with a broken rib, while others were subjected to violence and insults and the exterior of a police station in the city centre was vandalized.
Photos posted by news agencies showed two police vehicles set on fire and a protester was seen smashing the windows of the police station and firecrackers from the crowd.
