6.1-magnitude earthquake hits Russian Kuril Islands
SANAA, March 3 (YPA) – The Ministry of Emergencies in Sakhalin Province in the Russian Far East announced that it had detected an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale near Shikotan Island of the Kuril Islands.
In a statement, the ministry indicated that it had detected the earthquake at 8:22 a.m. on Wednesday, March 3 local time (0:22 Moscow time), 108 kilometers east of the town of Malokurilskoye on the aforementioned island.
The ministry added that “the epicenter of the earthquake was 50 km deep.”
The ministry emphasized that “according to the preliminary data, no injuries or damage were recorded. There were also no alerts issued about the possibility of tsunami waves.
