UN official on extrajudicial calls on Biden to impose sanctions on Saudi crown prince

SANAA, Feb. 27 (YPA) – The UN rapporteur on extrajudicial executions, Agnes Calamar, has called on the United States to impose sanctions on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman targeting his personal assets as well as his international involvement.

Agnes Callamard also called on America to take the initiative to ensure justice.

According to the UN investigator, Washington should not grant immunity to the Saudi crown prince from civil suits and ensure that all information is disclosed confidentially.

Meanwhile, Callamard called on the Saudi government to reveal the fate of Khashoggi’s body and whether it was disposed of at the consulate in Istanbul.

In addition, the New York Times quoted US officials as saying that President Joe Biden has decided not to punish Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman directly in connection with the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Senior administration officials, who were not named, noted that Biden’s decision comes after weeks of discussions with his security team, which concluded that there is no way to prevent the Saudi crown prince from entering the United States or criminally charge him without harming relations with Saudi Arabia, one of Washington’s most important allies in the region.

Officials said there was consensus within the White House that the price for damage to relations with Saudi Arabia would be too high for cooperation on counterterrorism and confronting Iran.

President Joe Biden’s administration on Friday evening released a declassified copy of the US intelligence report on the 2018 killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

“We believe that in 2018, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved an operation in Istanbul, Turkey, to arrest or kill journalist Jamal Khashoggi,” the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in the report.
