Death toll rises to 58 due to severe winter storm in US

SANAA, Feb. 21 (YPA) – Death toll due to severe winter storm in the southern United States has risen to 58, the New York Times reported  on Saturday.

The newspaper pointed out that this number includes victims of traffic accidents, carbon monoxide asphyxiations, fires in homes and other accidents associated with the cold wave.

The newspaper suggested that the real number of victims might be higher than estimates.

The cold wave has led to power cuts for millions of Americans and the explosion of water pipes in homes.

The New York Times reported that about 165,000 Texas residents were without electricity as of Friday, in addition to several million people without water. At the height of the crisis, 4 million people in Texas were without electricity this week.

President Joe Biden has tasked federal authorities with helping Texas deal with the effects of hail and snowstorms.
