SANAA, Feb. 8 (YPA) – A strong earthquake struck the Philippine islands, early on Monday.
According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the earthquake that struck the Philippine islands had a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale.
The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center stated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 60 km.
The Center added that the quake occurred at a latitude (5.69 north) and longitude (127.09 east).
No material or human losses or tsunamis were reported.
It is noteworthy that the Philippines is located in an area known as the “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean, where about 90% of earthquakes occur in the world.
The last major earthquake to hit the country had a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale, during which more than 220 people were killed in the central Philippines in October 2013.
In July 1990, more than 2,400 people died on the northern island of Luzon, following an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, one of the most severe earthquakes ever to hit the country.
