2 consecutive earthquakes of magnitude 5 hit western Turkey

SANAA, Feb. 1 (YPA) –  A 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit the western province of Izmir, Turkey, early on Monday, a few hours later, another earthquake of equal magnitude was reported.
The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that the first earthquake occurred at 8:46 am local time (5:46 am GMT) at a depth of 20.6 km, adding that the epicenter of the earthquake is Karaburun in Izmir, according to what was reported by “dailysabah” .

At 11:35 a.m. local time, another 5.1-magnitude earthquake was reported in Karaburun, this time at a depth of 3.4 km. The first earthquake was followed by four aftershocks of magnitude 4.8 and 4.7, and was also felt in neighboring provinces as well as on Lesbos, Greece.

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Izmir last October, killing 116 people, prompting the start of reconstruction projects.
