New York city names street after martyred Ibrahim al-Hamdi

SANAA, Feb. 1 (YPA) – The state of New York authorities have named of one of its main streets aftered martyred president of the Yemen Arab Republic, President Ibrahim al-Hamdi.

An official memorandum obtained by al-Thawra Net confirmed that the Board of Directors of Prince City approved the name of the street.

The street is located between two main streets, Korger and Reinlander.

The Yemeni community in New York had applied to name one of its streets in honour name of President al-Hamdi, and referred this request to a specialized committee to study it .

The committee formed after studying the proposal and admiring the personality of al-Hamdi submitted its report recommending the approval of the proposal to name a main street in honour of the martyr.

Ibrahim al-Hamdi ruled the Yemen Arab Republic from 1974 until his assassination in 1977. During his rule, Yemen made massive strides in modernisation, building up a modern healthcare and education system and significantly reducing poverty through the implementation of Socialist policies.

Ibrahim al-Hamdi was assassinated on 1 October 1977, and succeeded by a Saudi-backed military junta. Numerous pieces of evidence have surfaced recently pointing to Saudi Arabia as the likely culprit behind the assassination.
