SANAA, Feb. 1 (YPA) – Myanmar military TV confirmed on Monday that the army has taken control of the country and imposed a state of emergency for one year.
According to the “Associated Press”, “Myawadi” TV, owned by the military in Myanmar, transmitted this statement.
In its statement, the army said, “The authority has been transferred to the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, General Min Aung Hliang.”
A spokesman for the ruling National League for Democracy in Myanmar said today that the country’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other prominent figures from the party were arrested in an early morning raid.
The move comes after days of heightened tension between the civilian government and the military that has sparked fears of a coup in the wake of elections that the army described as rigged.
