SANAA, Dec. 28 (YPA) – The South African Ministry of Health said that the total number of coronavirus infections in the country exceeded the one million cases on Sunday.
South Africa, the hardest hit by the virus on the continent, surpassed the one million cases, only nine days after reaching 900,000 cases.
The South African government had rejected the claims of the United Kingdom about the seriousness of the new strain of “Covid-19” virus and criticized its decision to ban travel to it.
Local media quoted a statement by Minister of Health Zwaili Mkhize, saying that the new strain that recently appeared in South Africa resulted from a mutation similar to that found in the United Kingdom, known as “501.v2”, adding that there is no evidence that it causes more severe symptoms or lead to more deaths than the current virus.
