SANAA, Dec. 14 (YPA) – A gunman opened fire on an open-air concert on the stairs of St. John’s Cathedral in the Manhattan district of New York City, on Sunday evening.
The shooting came during a scheduled free Christmas carols parade on the steps of the historic church next to the cathedral choir, according to the New York Post.
According to Reuters, the police exchanged fire with the gunman, who opened fire.
“ABC News” reported that the suspect shot the police officers when they arrived at the scene, and the police fired back, wounding the gunman.
A spokesman for the New York City Police Department, Sgt. Edward Riley, said the gunman shot the police and no officer was hurt.
The sergeant confirmed that the police shot the armed man, and that he was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Reuters reported that the shooter died after arriving to the hospital of his wounds.
