SANAA, Dec. 5 (YPA) – The outgoing US President Donald Trump ordered the withdrawal of the majority of US forces from Somalia “by early 2021”, that is, immediately before his departure from power, according to what the Pentagon announced on Friday.
“A portion of the forces may be redeployed outside East Africa,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that “the rest of the forces will be transferred from Somalia to neighboring countries, with the aim of allowing cross-border operations by the United States and partner forces, to maintain pressure on violent extremist organizations.” Without specifying what these countries are.
The Pentagon stressed that “the United States does not withdraw or abandon Africa,” and claimed, “We will continue to weaken violent extremist organizations that are likely to threaten our lands,” pledging to “preserve the ability to conduct targeted counterterrorism operations in Somalia.”
Washington is also committed to continuing its intelligence activities on the ground.
According to what Washington announces, about 700 soldiers are in Somalia to train Somali forces and carry out raids to combat what is called terrorism.
On the opposite bank of Somalia, Washington announced in March 2015 an aggression against Yemen with the aim of dividing it and controlling the strategic areas, and after five years of aggression, media reports revealed the presence of American forces on Socotra Island, Hadramout Governorate, and Yemeni islands hidden behind Emirati and Saudi forces.
