Pope Francis describes Uyghur Muslims in China as “persecuted”

SANAA, Nov. 24 (YPA) – For the first time, Pope Francis described the Muslims of the Uyghur minority in China as “persecuted”, which human rights activists have been pushing for years.
Pope Francis said in his new book, “Let’s dream: the road to a better future,” that the Corona epidemic should stimulate governments to think in a permanent way about establishing a global basic income.
In one of the chapters of the book, in which he also talks about persecuted Christians in Muslim countries, the Pope said, “I always think of the persecuted Rohingya, the poor Uighurs and the Yazidis.”
In the 150-page book and expected to be released on December 1, Pope Francis talks about the economic, social and political changes he believes are necessary to deal with inequalities after the end of the pandemic.
Whereas Pope Francis previously spoke about the Rohingya who fled Myanmar and the killing of Yazidis at the hands of ISIS in Iraq, this was the first time he referred to the Uyghurs.
