SANAA, Nov. 15 (YPA) – Several rockets were fired from inside Ethiopian territory towards Eritrea’s capital, Asmara, regional diplomatic sources told Reuters.
Asmara had been hit by at least three missiles in a sharp escalation of the 11-day conflict between the Ethiopian Federal Army and local forces in Tigray state in northern Ethiopia on the border with Eritrea, Reuters reported, citing officials.
Three diplomatic sources, according to Reuters, said at least two of the three rockets hit Asmara airport.
Hundreds of people have been killed in armed clashes since Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sent federal forces to attack well-trained local forces in Tigray on November 4th, accusing them of attacking a military base in the area.
The United Nations, along with the African Union and humanitarian organizations, expressed concern that the fighting could spill over into other areas of Ethiopia and destabilize the Horn of Africa, warning of a deteriorating humanitarian situation there.
On November 10th, Tigray regional leader Debretsion Gebremichael said that Eritrea had sent units to Ethiopia to support federal forces.
