SANAA, May 19 (YPA) – At least eight people were killed and dozens of injured in an explosion that hit a sports stadium in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad on Friday night.
Local officials said the blasts occurred at a soccer stadium hosting a match at the beginning of Ramadan, noting that eight spectators were killed and 43 others injured in at least three blasts.
They added that the attack on an Afghan cricket match is highly unusual. The sport has been one of the few rallying points that have brought together supporters of both the government and Taliban militants.
The Nangarhar province bordering Pakistan is witnessing an increase of violence in this year, most recently that attack on a government building that killed at least 15 people.
The governor of the province was sacked from his office last week because of the security deterioration in the territory, which has become a stronghold for ISIS and Taliban fighters.
The state terrorist organization launched an attack last Sunday on a government administrative building in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, killing 15 people and injuring 42 others.
