Saudi Arabia fails to win UNHRC’s seat

SANAA, Oct. 14 (YPA) – Saudi Arabia’s attempts to win a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has failed.

The Saudi attempt came after the UNHRC’s many counties had refused to elect Saudi Arabia, as a result of its bad record in violation human rights.

the Guardian Newspapers of Britain considered, in a report, that the Saudi attempt came as a severe blow to the Kingdom’s efforts to improve its image in the international community following its admission of killing of the Saudi journalist “Jamal Khashoggi” inside his country’s consulate in Turkey for years, as well as the detention of human rights and pro-democracy activists.

Saudi Arabia, the current chair of the Group of Twenty, which plans to host the 2020 G20 Riyadh summit, got 90 votes, after it was defeated by Nepal.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch welcomed Saudi failure to win a seat on the Human Rights Council.
