UAE imposes Emirati identity on people of Socotra

SOCOTRA, Aug. 9 (YPA) – The UAE occupation has imposed the replacement of Yemeni identity cards with Emirati identities on some residents of Socotra Island, local sources reported on Sunday.

The UAE has moved towards replacing the personal cards of the people of the island with Emirati ones, which do not have any characteristic of the Yemeni Republic, the sources explained.

The sources pointed out that the UAE grants its own identities to some of Socotra’s citizens, through the so-called “Khalifa Foundation for Humanitarian Work”, under the supervision of its representative on the island Khalfan al-Mazrouei.

This comes after the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) militias seized the city of Hadibo, the capital of Socotra Island, in mid-June.

The UAE has adopted the distribution of Emirati IDs under the pretext of humanitarian aid during the last period, after counting the indigenous people and naturalization promises for the people of the island.
