SANAA, July 23 (YPA) – The Higher Agricultural and Fisheries Committee on Thursday warned of the dangers of urban sprawl and its effects on agricultural lands, valleys and sources of food security in Yemen.
The committee explained that the urban expansion increases the rates of pollution and the deterioration and desertification of agricultural lands.
In this regard, the committee praised the adoption of a community initiative by the leadership of the local authority and the Office of Agriculture and Irrigation in Dhamar province to reduce the urban expansion in agricultural lands and bottoms.
The committee called on the local authorities in the provinces to educate citizens and encourage them to cultivate, provide the necessary instructions to farmers, and adopt similar community initiatives to achieve self-sufficiency, stressing the need to take measures and enact and activate legislation to reduce this phenomenon.
