24 killed in armed attack on drug rehabilitation center in central Mexico

SANAA, July 2 (YPA) – At least Twenty-four people were killed in an attack by gunmen on a drug rehabilitation centre in the central city of Irapuato, Mexican authorities said Wednesday.

Seven others were also injured in the armed attack in Guanajuato state, the second such attack in the city in a month, according to Mexico’s Milenio News Network.

It was not immediately clear whether the same center had been targeted on both occasions, According to Reuters.

On June 6, 10 men were killed when gunmen opened fire at a rehabilitation centre in Irapuato.

The state of Guanajuato,  is a major hub for the automotive industry, has become one of the main hotbeds of escalating gang violence.

Criminal gangs are known to target drug rehabilitation centres, as part of their struggle for control of the drug trade.
