SANAA, June 4 (YPA) – Berlin announced on Wednesday that the summit scheduled for next September between the European Union and China in Germany will be postponed due to the emerging crisis of the Corona virus.
A German government spokesman said in a statement that German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Chinese President Xi Jinping and European Council President Charles Michel agreed that “given the general situation of the epidemic, the meeting cannot be held as scheduled.”
As a result, he added, “this summit, which was initially supposed to take place on September 14, will have to be postponed in Germany, which holds the semi-annual presidency of European Union meetings.”
The European Union and China had to postpone a planned summit in Beijing at the end of March due to the Covid-19 epidemic.
The goal of the two summits was to develop a new strategic partnership in 2020 and especially to encourage more free exchange between the two regions.
Among the most important issues that cause tension between the European Union and China, especially the development of the fifth generation (G5) network for communications in Europe, which raises Beijing’s interest.
The giant Huawei group is active in this sector, but Washington stands in the way of its ambitions and seeks to push the European Union to prevent it, pointing to the dangers of spying for Beijing.
