Tropical storm kills 11 in El Salvador
SANAA, June 1 (YPA) – SalvadorTropical Storm (Amanda) caused great devastation in El Salvador, killing 11 people, before it weakened its power and became a tropical depression.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, the Civil Protection Authority of El Salvador said on Sunday evening: The mudslides, floods and violent rivers flowing, have caused deaths.
Three deaths occurred in Granadillas, an area in the town of San Juan Obico, where a family was exposed to a violent current that was washed away with heavy flooding.
There were also deaths in the San Pedro area of the capital, San Salvador, and in Soyabango, La Paz and Nuevo Azrail.
The authority said that at least one person was still missing after the storm hit nearly 200 houses and uprooted dozens of trees, most of them in the western part of this Central American country.
Salvadoran President Najib Abukila has declared a red alert throughout the country and a 15-day emergency to facilitate recovery efforts in the aftermath of the storm.
Interior Minister Mario Duran told a news conference that the country was facing a “critical situation, raised by” Covid-19, and now this tropical storm.
Heavy rains are expected in the coming hours, although the storm (Amanda) has lessened its strength, after it reached land, according to warnings from the Ministry of Environment.
