UNICEF: Devastating diseases kill many Yemenis

SANAA, April 29 (YPA) – The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, warned of the growing danger to the lives of five million children under the age of five in Yemen as a result of the cholera epidemic and acute watery diarrhea, with heavy rains increasing since mid-April.

“The tragedy in Yemen is still unfolding to the world in all its manifestations, and the children of Yemen are still exposed to an endless number of risks to their survival,” said UNICEF Resident Representative in Yemen Sarah Piolo Niyanti in a statement.

Niyanti noted that “the spread of cholera on a wider scale, high levels of malnutrition and outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases and the Covid-19 pandemic, at present, are all causes that may exacerbate the burdens already placed on children and their families.”

“Without ending the five-year-old conflict in Yemen, devastating and preventable diseases will continue to kill many,” Niyanti said.
