Al-Sadr calls for early UN-sponsored elections in Iraq
BAGHDAD, Oct. 28 (YPA) – Leader of Sadrist movement in Iraq Muqtada al-Sadr on Monday called for early parliamentary elections under the United Nations supervision and free of the current political parties.
Al-Sadr asked Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi to come to the parliament to announce early elections under the supervision of the United Nations and without participation of the current parties.
“Adel Abdul Mahdi has to attend under the dome of the Parliament to announce early UN-supervised elections within a short legal period with taking all necessary measures to change the electoral commission and its law,” said al-Sadr in a statement.
Al-Sadr’s bloc, which came first in last year’s election and helped bring Abdul-Mahdi’s fragile alliance to power, said on Saturday it would turn to the opposition until the demands of anti-government protesters were met.
