5.1-magnitude earthquake hits eastern Indonesia

SANAA, July 24 (YPA) – A magnitude earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, struck East province of Indonesia, the U.S. Geological Research Center reported on Wednesday .

The U.S. Geological Research Center said in a statement that the earthquake occurred south of the Sumbersari area of East Java province.

According to the center, the magnitude of the earthquake was 103.2 kilometers below the earth’s surface.

Indonesian authorities have not announced any human or material casualties.

Indonesia is one of the world’s most vulnerable countries to natural disasters, situated on the so-called “fire belt” in the Pacific Ocean, which is an area with strong seismic and volcanic activity.
