8 workers killed in collapse of gold mine in Peru

SANAA, April 1 (YPA) – At least eight people were killed in a collapse of an illegal gold mine in Huamachuco, La Libertad Province in northern Peru, local media reported on Sunday.

The collapse was caused by a gas explosion in the mine tunnels, when 11 workers were inside, three of them were able to leave and notify the police.

Rescue teams and relatives of the victims recovered the bodies of the eight dead.

The incident occurred in the Cerro El Toro area, where a conflict between legal and illegal miners has been going on for a year, according to the media.
