UN calls for $ 5 billion for aid in Yemen

SANAA, Dec. 10  (YPA) – UN Under-Secretary-General Mark Lowcock warned of the worsening humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

In a statement, Lowcock  said on Tuesday, “The United Nations needs $ 5 billion to provide humanitarian assistance to nearly 20 million Yemenis next year, more than 70 percent of the population of Yemen suffering from the ravages of war that is tearing the country apart.”

Lowcock expressed the hope that the peace talks in Sweden under the auspices of the United Nations will produce positive results.

He condemned the obstacles facing the arrival of humanitarian aid to the Yemenis, referring to the siege of the alliance of the port of Hodeidah.

Lowcock called for saving the Yemeni economy, which is on the edge of the abyss.

UN Under-Secretary-General Mark Lowcock had held a three-day visit to Yemen at the end of last November.
