SANAA, Oct. 22 (YPA) – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in a televised interview on Sunday evening that he could not rule out that his country canceled a huge arms deal for Riyadh after the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
According to Agency France-Press, Trudeau said during the interview on Thursday that his country intends to “always defend human rights, including with Saudi Arabia.”
Journalist asked whether Canada would keep the huge arms deal between Ottawa and Riyadh, which requires the purchase of Riyadh light armored vehicles with an estimated 9, 9 billion euros, Trudeau said: “in this contract, there are provisions to be followed in the way of using what we sell to them”.
“If they do not follow these terms, we will definitely cancel the contract,” he added.
The Liberal Prime Minister said that this contract, which was strongly criticized by human rights organizations, and it had not been carried out by the Conservative government that preceded him.
Last year, Ottawa expressed fears that Riyadh would use these light armored vehicles for repression in the eastern part of the kingdom.
