WASHINGTON, Nov.03 (YPA) – American voters are heading to the polls today, Tuesday, to cast their ballots in the congressional midterm elections.
Candidates are competing for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and approximately one-third of the seats in the Senate, in addition to various state governorships and other legislative and local offices.
The Democratic Party is seeking to regain a majority in one or both chambers of Congress, while the Republican Party is working to maintain its current control, amid a closely balanced power dynamic and narrow majorities.
Losing their majority in either chamber would limit the Trump administration’s ability to advance its legislative agenda and give Democrats greater influence over fiscal and oversight matters, including investigations into the administration’s performance and policies.
The elections come amid declining public approval ratings for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, as concerns grow over the cost of living, inflation and energy prices, alongside the economic fallout from the war with Iran, which has placed additional pressure on American households.
Midterm elections take place every two years, halfway through a presidential term. They involve the election of all 435 members of the House of Representatives, while Senate elections cover roughly one-third of its 100 seats. The 2026 elections include contests for 35 Senate seats, as well as gubernatorial races in 36 states.
