Sanaa ministry sets official bread prices, launches inspection campaigns

SANAA, Oct. 24 (YPA) – The Ministry of Economy, Industry and Investment in Sanaa on Saturday urged bakeries, ovens, restaurants, and sales outlets to comply with the ministry’s official bread prices, set at 450 rials per kilogram at traditional bakeries and 400 rials at automated bakeries. Each loaf must weigh at least 45 grams, with five loaves sold for 100 rials.

During a meeting chaired by Acting Minister of Economy, Industry and Investment Sam Al-Bashiri, attended by Deputy Executive Director of the Yemeni Authority for Standards, Metrology and Quality Control Ahmed Al-Humaidi and Deputy Chairman of the Sanaa Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mohammed Salah, the ministry confirmed that the official prices were based on a study conducted by a joint cost committee comprising the ministry, the standards authority, and the chamber’s bakery sector.

The meeting approved the launch of extensive field inspection and monitoring campaigns at bakeries, ovens, and sales outlets in the capital, Sanaa, and other governorates, starting Sunday.

The campaigns aim to enforce bread prices and weight requirements and ensure that the flour extraction rate complies with approved standards of 86 percent.

The meeting also tasked the ministry’s offices in the capital and other governorates with conducting immediate field visits to verify compliance.

It further approved the formation of joint higher supervisory committees comprising representatives of the ministry, the standards authority, and the Sanaa Chamber of Commerce to monitor the campaigns, verify implementation on the ground, protect consumers, and prevent violations or exploitation affecting bakery owners.

Al-Bashiri said the campaign seeks to strike a balance and protect the rights of both consumers and bakery owners through fair and transparent mechanisms.

He stressed that field teams must adhere to established legal procedures, warning that strict and deterrent measures would be taken against any attempts at extortion or embezzlement by inspection committees.
