Sayyid al-Houthi: “What happened to Omar al-Bashir is a lesson for those betting on alliances with Washington, Riyadh”

SANAA, Oct. 08 (YPA) – Sayyid Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, the leader of the Ansarallah movement, delivered a televised speech on Thursday marking the anniversary of the “Great Hall” bombing in Sanaa and addressing the latest developments in Yemen.

In his address, he touched upon Saudi Arabia’s continuation of its military operations in Yemen rather than ending the war and lifting the blockade.

Sayyid Al-Houthi stated that standing alongside the United States and Saudi Arabia, and participating in the war on Yemen, carries political and historical consequences that end tragically. He cited former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and his eventual fate after years of providing support and aligning with Riyadh and Washington.

Al-Houthi noted that Sudan’s participation in the Saudi-led coalition in the war on Yemen was based on political calculations and perceived interests that the Sudanese leadership believed would yield gains, before the equations shifted, culminating in al-Bashir’s ouster and the collapse of his regime.

“What happened to the former Sudanese president should serve as a ‘lesson’ for anyone betting on an alliance with the United States and Saudi Arabia,” he added, describing the political calculations and gains al-Bashir sought as mere “mirage-like illusions,” contrasted with what he termed divine accountability for al-Bashir and the Janjaweed forces for their positions.

He further noted that current events in Sudan evoke sadness, while maintaining that al-Bashir’s fate provides a political lesson for those relying on foreign powers, stating that “al-Bashir’s calculations vanished, and everyone turned against him.”

The leader of Ansarallah explained that the former Sudanese leadership’s stance on the war in Yemen was an example of relying on regional and international alliances to achieve political gains, asserting that subsequent developments demonstrated the limitations of such calculations.

Under al-Bashir, Sudan was a participant in the Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen. However, his regime was overthrown in April 2019 following months of popular protests, leading to his removal and detention by the military.

Since then, Sudan entered a turbulent transitional period that ultimately culminated in the outbreak of conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023.
