Berri: ‘Israeli forces expand occupation in Lebanon despite seven rounds of talks’

BEIRUT, Aug. 31 (YPA) – Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri affirmed on Monday that seven rounds of negotiations with the Israeli occupation had resulted in an expansion of the territory occupied by the occupation in Lebanon, stressing that it continues its aggression.

Berri reiterated his rejection of any security belt or buffer zone in southern Lebanon, regardless of the sacrifices involved.

He clarified that what Israeli occupation seeks is not Hezbollah or the Amal movement, but rather strife, stressing that Lebanon, its national unity and civil peace are being targeted amid the escalation with the occupation.

Berri also rejected any relinquishment of Lebanon’s right to hold Israel accountable for its aggression and crimes, warning that giving up this right would amount to surrendering national sovereignty.

He stressed that no one has the right to relinquish it and that it must not be lost through negotiations or the passage of time.

Regarding the negotiations, Berri said the Lebanese side had exercised its democratic right to reject the framework agreement and remains committed to the same position, warning against negotiating with the Israeli occupation while under fire.

He added that the existential risks facing Lebanon do not give any party the right to deal with sovereign issues under any pretext, whether through a framework agreement, secret annexes or otherwise.
