European Commission calls on Israel to abide by international law and protect civilians

BRUSSEL, Aug. 20 (YPA) – The European Commission spokesperson Anita Heber called on Israel to fully comply with its obligations under international law and international humanitarian law, and to ensure the protection of civilians at all times.

This came during a press conference on Tuesday, in response to statements by the Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who on August 16 called for 30-40 attacks every night on Gaza, including targeting people who do not pose a direct threat.

Heber confirmed that the Commission does not comment on Ben-Gvir’s statements per se, but stressed the EU’s firm position on the need for Israel to respect international law and protect civilians.

These statements come amidst the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip, supported by the US since October 7, 2023, which has so far resulted in the martyrdom of more than 73,000 Palestinians and the injury of more than 174,000, most of whom are children and women.
