Khalil al-Hayya elected head of Hamas Political Bureau succeeding al-Sinwar
GAZA, July 20 (YPA) – The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) announced on Monday the election of senior leader Khalil al-Hayya as head of its Political Bureau, succeeding the late Yahya al-Sinwar.
The appointment follows an internal electoral process conducted by the General Shura Council, which included representatives from Gaza, the West Bank, Israeli occupation prisons, and abroad.
In a formal statement, Hamas emphasized that completing the council’s elections amid complex political and security conditions underscores the continuity of its institutional framework and organizational regulations, noting unified leadership support behind al-Hayya.
Hamas outlined its current operational priorities:
- Ceasing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and lifting the siege on the Gaza Strip.
- Facilitating the entry of humanitarian and medical aid and commencing reconstruction efforts.
- Rejecting displacement plans, supporting Palestinians across Quds (Jerusalem), the West Bank, and the diaspora, and defending detainees.
The movement reaffirmed its commitment to resistance and the legacy of its fallen leaders, including Ismail Haniyeh, Saleh al-Arouri, Yahya al-Sinwar, and Mohammed Deif.
Al-Hayya, a chief political negotiator for the movement, was selected following a second-round runoff mandated by internal bylaws. His election concludes a transitional phase managed by a leadership committee chaired by Mohammad Ismail Darwish following the death of al-Sinwar.
