Dozens injured as fire engulfs makeshift camp in Sanaa

SANAA, May 12 (YPA) – A major fire broke out Tuesday evening in a local camp in the Ma’een district in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, leaving dozens injured and causing extensive material damage, amid a large deployment of civil defense teams.

A civil defense source in the capital told Yemen Press Agency that firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control after it erupted in shanty housing on Al- Zubairi Street toward 60th Street, following a major response involving 13 fire trucks.

The source said civil defense teams responded immediately after receiving the alert and succeeded in containing the flames and preventing them from spreading to nearby homes south of the camp, despite the rapid spread of the fire through tents and tin-sheet shelters.

He added that the fire left 50 people injured with minor to moderate burns, including five cases of suffocation. All were transferred to the Republican Hospital for treatment.

Material losses were described as significant, with a large number of makeshift shelters completely destroyed.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by relevant authorities, the source said.
