ADEN, May 11 (YPA) – A southern activist has accused security and military figures aligned with Saudi Arabia of backing checkpoints that impose fees and levies on truck drivers across major roads in Aden and other southern provinces.
Activist Majid Al-Dairi said a “battle against levies” represents one of the main obstacles to economic reform efforts and a major challenge facing the government of Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed.
He added that these collection points are supported by unnamed “security, military, and influential government figures,” without providing further details about their identities or affiliations.
According to his statements, armed personnel stationed at checkpoints along routes linking areas controlled by Saudi-backed factions reportedly collect significant fees from each truck, starting from Port of Aden and extending through Marib via Abyan and Shabwa.
He added that additional checkpoints operate along the coastal road from Aden through Lahj toward Mocha city on Yemen’s western coast.
