From Barcelona to Gaza: “Global Sumud Flotilla” sets sail with 1,000 volunteers to break siege

BARCELONA, April 12 (YPA) – The “Global Sumud Flotilla” is preparing to set sail on Sunday from the coast of Barcelona, Spain, heading toward the Gaza Strip.

This humanitarian mission marks the largest coordinated effort to date aimed at breaking the Israeli blockade.

The flotilla comprises approximately 70 vessels carrying nearly 1,000 volunteers from 70 different nations.

The ships are laden with essential food supplies, medicines, and educational kits specifically for the children of Gaza.

This year’s mission features prominent global organizations, including Greenpeace and Open Arms, with significant logistical support from the Barcelona City Council.

Pablo Castilla, a spokesperson for the flotilla, stated that the initiative aims to:

  1. Condemn “international complicity” regarding the ongoing atrocities in Gaza.
  2. Demand the establishment of a permanent humanitarian maritime and land corridor.
  3. Refocus global attention on the suffering in Gaza amidst shifting geopolitical interests toward regional escalations in Lebanon and Iran.

This expedition is a significantly expanded follow-up to the September 2025 mission, nearly doubling the number of vessels and participants to amplify the humanitarian and legal plea to the international community.
