Stampede at Haiti heritage site leaves at least 30 dead

HAITI, April 12 (YPA) – At least 30 people were killed on Sunday in a stampede in northern Haiti, authorities said on Sunday.

According to civil protection official Jean-Henri Petit, the incident occurred at the historic Citadelle Laferrière, a major tourist site dating back to the early 19th century.

The fortress was crowded with students and visitors attending an annual celebration at the UNESCO-listed site when the stampede broke out.

Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé said many young people were among those present, though the identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed. He added that the crush occurred at the entrance to the site and was worsened by heavy rainfall.
