Aden teachers protest outside governorate council’s headquarters demanding new salary scale
ADEN, Feb. 10 (YPA) – Dozens of educational staff and retired teachers held a mass protest outside the Aden Governorate council’s headquarters, controlled by authorities loyal to Saudi Arabia.
The demonstrators condemned the deterioration of their living conditions and what they described as the “systematic neglect” of their legal rights.
The protesters’ demands focused on resolving long-standing financial issues, most notably:
- Salary Scale: Implementing a new wage structure aligned with the current economic collapse or restoring the purchasing power equivalent to 2014 salary levels.
- Incentives and Allowances: Raising the local governorate incentive to 100,000 YER and releasing all suspended annual increments and settlements.
- Professional Status: Granting the “Nature of Work” allowance to the 2011 cohort and finalizing the status of transferred teachers.
The protest featured a significant presence of retired teachers, who demanded the payment of allowances for the past five years and an end to unfair deductions from their pensions. Meanwhile, contract teachers called for an end to temporary hiring policies, demanding formal contracts that ensure job security and equal incentives.
The protesters held the Ministries of Education, Civil Service, and Finance fully responsible for the ongoing suffering within the educational sector, vowing to continue their escalation until all rights are secured.
