800 British judges, lawyers, academics demand sanctions on “Israel”
LONDON, May 27 (YPA) – More than 800 prominent UK judges, lawyers, and academics, including former Supreme Court justices, have called on the British government to impose immediate sanctions on “Israel”.
This call came in an unprecedented letter addressed to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, which legal experts considered a warning of the danger of the collapse of the international legal system.
They asserted that “Israel” is violating international law in the occupied Palestinian territories, accusing it of committing acts amounting to genocide in Gaza.
The letter, signed by prominent UK legal figures, criticized Britain’s silence on what it described as war crimes and crimes against humanity.
It called for concrete measures, including sanctions against Israeli ministers and officials, the suspension of the UK-Israel partnership stipulated in the 2030 Roadmap, and consideration of suspending Israel’s membership in the United Nations.
The letter emphasized the need to implement the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
It also strongly condemned Israel’s ban on UNRWA, describing it as a clear attack on the United Nations, warning that the failure of the international community, particularly Britain, to act would threaten the global legal order and open the door to impunity.
