Planned protest in Aden to demand salary payments amid economic crisis

ADEN, Nov. 30 (YPA) – The Central Bank of Aden, operating under the control of the Saudi-led coalition, has not been able to pay employee salaries for the third month in a row, sparking fears of an impending famine that could devastate the city’s residents.

A number of political activists from Aden and the southern provinces have called for a protest next Monday in front of the Maashiq Palace gate in the Crater area to demand payment of salaries.

The protest is also a response to accusations against pro-coalition government and the “Presidential Leadership Council” of enforcing a starvation policy against employees.

Activists called on all workers and the starving population to take part in the protest to demand their rights from the pro-coalition leadership, including the Southern Transitional Council (STC), which they accuse of disregarding their suffering.

They also condemned the pro-coalition government’s silence and its inability to carry out even the most basic economic reforms to stop the ongoing devaluation of the Yemeni riyal against foreign currencies.

It is worth noting that since the Central Bank’s administration was moved from Sana’a to Aden at the end of 2016, the coalition-backed government has flooded the southern provinces with over 5,320,000,000,000 Yemeni riyals in printed currency, without any monetary backing, between 2016 and 2021.
